About the Firm
The firm is committed to protecting and restoring our natural resources and to making a positive difference in people’s lives by defending the rights of those whose person or property has been injured or damaged by environmental contamination.
Thomas Barefoot has been in the private practice of environmental and toxic tort law for over thirty years, located first in North Carolina and since 2006 in Maryland. Now based in Annapolis, Maryland, Tom is licensed in Maryland and North Carolina and admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of those states.
The firm focuses almost exclusively on environmental law and litigation on behalf of those seeking to prevent or stop the release of toxic substances into the environment, on behalf of those seeking redress for property damage and personal injuries caused by the release of toxic substances and on behalf of those seeking to restore property to an environmentally safe and economically productive condition.
For the past twenty years, Tom has represented individuals, communities and small businesses, against major corporations and others responsible for harm resulting from the release of hazardous substances and toxic chemicals into the environment. Tom has assisted those seeking to restore Superfund or Brownfields sites to an environmentally safe and economically productive condition. In addition, Tom has provided advice on environmental issues involved in business and real estate transactions.
If litigation is required, Tom has resolved matters through mediation or alternative dispute resolution, tried cases to judgment and handled appeals in state and federal appellate courts, recently having successfully opposed a Petition for Writ of Certiorari in the U.S. Supreme Court.
